Description: Residence located in the outlying agricultural area of Esperance completed mid 2002 explores the notion of the contemporary ‘farm’ residence that responds to the climatic and environmental conditions that are unique to the region. The building form responds to both the panoramic views over the farm and the requirement for solar penetration in the colder months to all areas of the residence. The central living area separates and connects the sleeping wings and while providing views to both the northeast and southwest. External decks to either end of the living ‘core’ ensure there are outdoor living areas to suit the season, sun position and most importantly wind conditions that have a major impact use such areas in the region. A palette of material consisting of rammed earth and corrugated zincalume finish to both external cladding and roofing responds to both the notion of connection to the land in a literal sense and a reference to a traditional rural building approach. The sheds form a crucial nexus in the operation of the farm and as such reference to these structures through materiality and a direct visual connection was considered important. |
